CS2 FAMAS Spray Pattern: Recoil, Burst Mode and Force Buys

The FAMAS is the CT force buy, and it is a better weapon than its reputation suggests. It is a rifle at pistol-round prices, it has a burst mode almost nobody uses correctly, and on the right round it turns a broke CT side into a side that CTs actually have to play around. It also loses badly to a real rifle in a fair fight, so the entire skill of the FAMAS is arranging fights that are not fair. At BloodyCase, this guide covers the FAMAS spray pattern, what burst mode is genuinely for, and how to spend $2,050 without wasting it.

FAMAS at a Glance

SideCounter-Terrorists only. Terrorists can use it only by picking one up
Price$2,050
Kill reward$300
Magazine25 rounds, 90 in reserve
Rate of fire666 rounds per minute in automatic
Fire modesAutomatic and 3-round burst
HeadshotNot reliably lethal through a helmet

Twenty-five rounds and no one-tap means the FAMAS asks you to land several bullets with a small magazine. That is a demanding combination and it is why position matters more with this rifle than with any other CT weapon.

How the FAMAS Recoil Pattern Works

The FAMAS follows a fixed recoil path that repeats every magazine, with a small random spread applied to each individual bullet on top of it. Learn the path, accept the spread.

In automatic fire the shape is a compressed M4A4: a quick vertical climb, a flatten, and then horizontal movement that is looser than an M4 and arrives sooner. The magazine is small enough that you reach the awkward part of the pattern early, and there is not much magazine left once you get there. In practice the FAMAS gives you about a dozen bullets worth of usable spray and then asks what your plan was.

The pattern is not hard. The weapon is just less accurate than the rifle you wish you had bought, and no amount of compensation fixes accuracy.

The Phases at a Glance (Automatic)

PhaseBulletsWhat the gun doesWhat you do
Phase 11 to 8Quick vertical climbFirm, fast pull down
Phase 29 to 17Vertical flattens, loose horizontal swingLateral corrections, wider than they feel
Phase 318 to 25Loose oscillation, then emptyMicro-corrections, then reload

FAMAS Recoil Compensation: Step by Step

  • Pull down through Phase 1 quickly. The high fire rate packs the climb into a short window, so the pull has to be fast even though it is not large.
  • Correct laterally in Phase 2 and expect it to be untidy. The looseness here is the weapon, not your mistake.
  • Finish or reload in Phase 3. Twenty-five rounds goes faster than you expect. Reload after every duel, without exception.

Burst Mode: What It Is Actually For

Burst mode fires three rounds per click. Most players try it once, decide it feels strange, and never touch it again. That is roughly the right conclusion for close-range fights and roughly the wrong one for the rounds where you actually bought this rifle.

  • Use burst at range. Three rounds arrive tightly grouped and inside the easy part of the recoil pattern. At distance, where your problem is accuracy rather than damage, that is exactly what you want.
  • Do not burst up close. There is a rhythm to burst fire and it is slower than an opponent inside ten metres will give you. Automatic, always, in a close fight.
  • Burst is a holding tool. You are a CT on a force buy. Your job is to hold an angle, do damage from distance, and force the T side to spend utility. Burst mode is built precisely for that job and it is why the FAMAS is a better force weapon than the Galil.
  • Bind your fire mode switch somewhere you can actually reach. If switching modes requires you to look at your keyboard, you will never do it in a round, and half the weapon stays unused.

Counter-Strafing Comes First

Strafing right with D, you tap A for an instant and your velocity drops to zero almost immediately, and a bullet fired on that frame is accurate. Simply releasing D leaves you sliding, and every bullet fired during that slide is a coin flip. With twenty-five rounds and no one-tap, you have less margin for wasted bullets than almost anyone on the server.

Key Principles for the FAMAS

  • You are holding, not entering. The FAMAS is a CT weapon on a poor round, which means angles, distance, crossfires and utility. If you are pushing out into open space with a FAMAS, you have misunderstood the round.
  • Force buy as a team. Five FAMAS with armour and a smoke is a real round. One FAMAS is a $2,050 gift to the T side.
  • Armour is not optional. Without a kit you die to bullets you would have survived, and the whole point of forcing is to survive long enough to trade and steal weapons.
  • Pick up their rifle. The best outcome of any FAMAS round is that you finish it holding an AK. Play towards that.
  • Stop moving completely before firing. The movement accuracy penalty in CS2 is brutal, and a running FAMAS spray is close to random.
  • Set your sensitivity and stop touching it. The number that matters is eDPI, DPI multiplied by in-game sensitivity. Most competitive players sit between 700 and 1200 eDPI, which usually looks like 400 DPI with 1.75 to 3.0 sensitivity, or 800 DPI with 0.9 to 1.5.
  • Reload constantly. Twenty-five rounds is not many and getting caught empty in a retake is the standard FAMAS death.

How to Practice Firing the FAMAS in CS2

Two or three sessions. Most of your M4 skill carries over.

  • Session 1, Automatic Pattern: Fire 10-bullet bursts at a wall from close range, roughly two player widths back, on Recoil Master or aim_botz. Learn how much faster the pull has to be than an M4A1-S.
  • Session 2, Burst at Range: On aim_botz, switch to burst and fire at the furthest bots on the map. Nothing else. The job is to learn where the three bullets land relative to your crosshair, so that in a round you know whether that grouping kills.
  • Session 3, Force Buy Simulation: Deathmatch, FAMAS only, holding angles rather than pushing. Switch to burst whenever the fight is far and back to automatic when it is close. That switch, made under pressure, is the entire weapon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the FAMAS actually good?

For its price, yes, and it is meaningfully better than most players think. It is a rifle for barely more than half the cost of an M4, with a burst mode that is genuinely useful for the exact situation you bought it in. What it is not is a substitute for an M4 on a full buy. Judged as a force buy weapon it is strong. Judged as a rifle it is weak. Both are true.

Should I use burst mode?

At range, yes, and it is the most underused button in the game. Up close, no. If you never switch modes, you are playing a slightly worse M4A4 and paying for a feature you refuse to use.

FAMAS or Galil: which force buy rifle is better?

They are not directly comparable since you buy whichever your side sells, but the FAMAS suits its side better. The CT force is about holding angles at distance, and burst mode plus a slightly better weapon serves that. The T force is about rushing close, and the Galil with its thirty-five rounds serves that. Each is built for the job its side has to do on a broke round.

How many bullets should I spray with the FAMAS?

Eight to twelve, then reassess and reload. The magazine does not allow more and the pattern does not reward it.
